Hello to all!
A productive week last week despite it being a short week.

In Language, the students did their first RECOUNT about the power outage we all experienced last weekend. Most remembered the middle section of a recount where events are described in order. A focus for next week will be to look at the beginning, also known as the introduction. Ask your child what a recount is now? Then, ask them at the end of our unit to see how much more they can add to their answer.

The focus in Math was still on place value. We did a group activity to reinforce the concept that  numbers can be built or represented using base ten blocks in different ways. The photo is fuzzy here but the number 534 is represented one way in the first row. Then, we represented it another way by trading a hundreds pad for 10 ten rods. Ask your child if they could represent that same number in yet another way. Hint: Exchange a ten rod for something!

We also had fun reinforcing the concept that each number has a value. Here, our friends were asked to make the greatest 3 digit number with a 6, a 0 and a 3.

Then, they were asked to arrange themselves to have the smallest 3 digit number. This led to a great discussion! Is this a 3 digit number or really a 2 digit number? It was nice to see and hear some great explanations.

Despite the fact that we had some technology issues in the class, we were still able to learn about what being a good digital citizen is? Ask your child if they remember the main idea or message of the rap song "A Good Citizen."

A FEW REMINDERS......

Your child's class was busy last week!
Here are a few of our read alouds that we read in class. In Language, we were making text to self, text to text and text to world connections. Ask your child to make a connection for you.

In Math, we took a break from graphing and starting looking at place value. Use this anchor chart and the examples below to assist with any homework questions.

We talked about the importance of staying healthy. We re-connected with what we already knew about the four food groups. We dug a little deeper and explored what the word ALTERNATIVE meant when discussing the meat and dairy categories. See if your child can tell you the differences between these 2 food guides.

A FEW REMINDERS......
  • We will be going on the chromebooks this week coming. Thanks to those who have already sent in compact, inexpensive earbuds/earphones for your child to use.
  • A note went home with your child on Friday regarding selling chocolates for the school. Please fill it out and return it to the school if you DO NOT wish to get a box of chocolate.

  • Homework (if we get power back) and the spelling books will be going home on Monday. Please read and sign the inside covers of each book. Both books are due back on Friday.

Our class had another busy yet productive week last week. We were able to practise 3 out of the 5 centres for Daily Five. Below you will see photos of the students engaged in those 3 centres. We will work on the last two this coming week just as soon as I get the passwords for our chromebooks and its programs.

We started our unit on Strong and Stable Structures in Science. Ask your child about the two experiments we did. One was testing STABILITY and the one that your child built a square and a triangle was to test STRENGTH.

A few reminders......
  • Please send back the Terry Fox Walk permission form as soon as possible. There are a few extra instructions for those of you who have graciously volunteered. A Police Record Check needs to be completed prior to actively volunteering at the school. You are encouraged to follow the link on our school's website page to complete this process. It can be found on the left hand side of the school's website page.
  • Your child will need inexpensive small earphones/earbuds for a centre for Daily 5. They will    be kept in their individual magazines boxes so i need to stress-small and portable.
  • We have some severe allergies in our classroom. Please join me in keeping our classroom safe. We a a PEANUT,  TREE NUT, EGG and SESAME PRODUCT FREE classroom.

What a great start to the new year we had last week!! Most of our days were spent on getting to know one another and establishing our new classroom community.  The students were eager to let me know how routines were done in their grade 2 classes and together we came up with new routines suitable for grade 3 seeing how everyone is that much more eager to accept responsibility. We kept what worked well in previous years such as raising our hands to share our thoughts in a large group but we re-vamped things such as no longer needing to line up in ABC order or needing to be assigned a hook for our school bag and jacket.

I like to read to the class while they are having their snacks. Here are the books we read. Ask your child if they can re-tell any story back to you or what was the main idea of any of these books.

In our class we make lots of mistakes and run into many problems throughout the day. We use these as learning opportunities. I ran into a problem with our pictograph anchor chart. The class respectfully helped me with my problem. Ask your child to show you all MY mistakes in the first photo and see how we fixed them all in the second photo.

A look ahead to next week........
  • Program Night is this Wednesday September 12th from 6:00 to 7:30pm. The format is a little different this year. Mrs. MacAulay will explain the new set up when we assemble together in the gym that evening. I look forward to seeing you there.
  • Agenda payment of $10 is due by September 21st via School Cash Online. The link is on the right hand side of our school website.
  • Another form is being sent home on Monday to be filled in. The form is a blanket permission form for walking excursions off school grounds such as the Terry Fox Walk or a nature walk.
  • Terry Fox Walk will be on Friday September 28th this year. More details to come.
Have a great week. I know we will!

Hello and Welcome to our Grade 3 Class!

I will post blogs weekly so you can see the interesting things that are happening in your child's class. Hopefully the photos will act as conversation starters and will assist you and your child with some curriculum questions.
I will post class photos just as soon as I get each child's Consent to Post form that was attached to their agenda today.

Today we read the book First Day Jitters. The class made connections with the story and we collected data about our classmates and how they felt on their first day of school this year.
Please take a moment to look at all the paperwork that is attached to your child's agenda. I use the bull clip to ensure things get home and back to school without getting lost. Can you try your best to keep it there so we can continue to use this system.
Looking forward to many more FANTASTIC days in Grade 3!
